Is an Online Quran Ijazah Authentic? How Sanad Works Remotely

“Will the ijazah I earn online carry the same weight as one earned in person?” It's a common question, and the short answer is yes — as long as the person granting it is a qualified sheikh who holds a connected chain (sanad), the online ijazah is just as valid. What matters is the direct transmission and mastery, not the location.

First, what is an ijazah? It is a certificate a qualified sheikh grants a student, confirming that they received the Quran (in recitation or memorization) and mastered it correctly — and authorizing them to teach others. Its true value lies in the sanad attached to it.

The sanad is the unbroken chain of teachers that links your recitation — teacher after teacher — all the way back to the Prophet ﷺ. This chain is what has preserved the Quran for centuries; you don't just receive a paper, you enter a living chain of transmission.

How does the sanad work remotely? Simply: you recite the entire Quran (or the set portion) to a certified sheikh in live audio-and-video sessions, and they correct, listen and assess. Once you have mastered it, they grant you the ijazah with their sanad. The direct oral transmission is fulfilled — even through a screen — and that is the essence of face-to-face narration.

But beware a decisive distinction: some platforms teach Tajweed well yet hold no chain of transmission, so they cannot grant a valid ijazah no matter what they call their certificates. A recognized ijazah comes from a sheikh holding a documented, traceable sanad — not from a hollow “certificate of completion.”

So your first criterion when seeking an ijazah: verify the sheikh's own ijazah and sanad — is he genuinely certified (Al-Azhar / a recognized master)? Is the chain connected and clear? This is the difference between an ijazah that scholars recognize and one with no real value.
